四級英語詞匯起源及巧記方法

　　1、Pillow枕頭

　　pillow起源于拉丁語。原寫作pulvinus，意思是"墊子"，進入英語后寫作pylu，后又變?yōu)閜illow。這種拼法的變化是簡直想象不到的。但詞義的變化并不大。

　　2、Blanket毯子

　　hlanket一詞來自古法語blanquette，是在blane(白色的)一詞的基礎(chǔ)上構(gòu)成的詞，最初指的是作衣服用的"白色毛布"，直到14世紀(jì)中期才用來專指"毯子"。

　　3、Carpet毯

　　看一看carpet(地毯)、scarce(稀少)和excerpt(節(jié)選)這三個詞，你也許想象不到它們竟同出一源，都是從拉丁動詞carpo(摘、拔)派生來的。這三個看起來風(fēng)馬牛不相及的詞卻由"摘"、"拔"，即carpo，這條線給穿了起來。

　　據(jù)說最早的地毯是用拆散的毛線制成的毛布，carpo在這里就是"摘毛線頭兒"或"梳理毛線"，carpet就是由此而來的。

　　scarce來自法語詞escars(稀少的)，來源于拉丁詞excarpsus:ex即"out";carpo即"pluck";合起來的意思是"拔掉"。比如，當(dāng)人們從兔子的身上把毛拔下時，兔子身上的毛就變得稀少了。

　　excerpt來源于拉丁詞excerptus:ex即"out";cerptus即"pluck";合起來即"從文中摘出"。

　　4、Damask錦緞

　　damask是一種質(zhì)地柔軟的錦緞，是以敘利亞的首都大馬士革(Damascus)命名的。

　　另外，是一種粉紅色的玫瑰叫damask rose(大馬士革薔薇)，也是從這個城市的名字來的。由此又有了damask cheeks(粉腮)的說法。

　　5、Cambric麻紗

　　cambric最初指的是一種織得很薄很密的白色亞麻布，因經(jīng)法國斯凱爾特河的港市Cambrai(康布雷)出口而得名。然而這種布因大量生產(chǎn)銷售，后來就出現(xiàn)了以棉代麻、粗紡細(xì)織、以假充真的情況，改變了"麻紗"的性質(zhì)。"假作真，真亦假"，正宗的麻紗反而少見。Cambric倒成了這種假麻沙或仿麻紗的代名詞。
