這本書是心理學史。共20章。第一章是概述。從第二章起到本書最后，作者從古希臘哲人的思想開始，一路講到古羅馬，中世紀，文藝復興時期的科學和哲學，英國的經驗論、法國的感覺論、孔德的'實證論，以及與經驗論相對立的唯理論，再往后就是浪漫主義和存在主義。再往后才是一般意義上心理學領域的精神分析、完形心理、機能主義心理學、行為主義、新行為主義、人本主義、認知心理等。
