　　影片展現了20世紀60年代美國華盛頓底層社會的一面。塞爾瑪有一個令她心痛的秘密：由于遺傳因素，她的視力正慢慢地衰退，只能靠著高度近視鏡才能維持微弱的視力，她發(fā)現兒子吉恩也有同樣的疾病，如果她不能掙到足夠的錢支付動手術的費用，吉恩也難以逃脫變瞎的命運。為了給兒子湊錢動手術，塞爾瑪開始日夜不停地加班，將辛苦賺來的每分每毫都裝在一個小鐵皮盒里。

　　盡管現實是如此殘酷，塞爾瑪還是有自己的消遣方式——她的精神支柱是對音樂的激情，特別是對充滿著歌唱、舞蹈的好萊塢音樂劇感興趣。在工廠的歌舞團里，塞爾瑪經常和工友們排練《音樂之聲》，她把自己想像成劇中的主角，以此給予自己疲憊的心靈以撫慰，并自我沉醉。同時，她還有兩個很好的朋友——車間里的女工頭凱茜和暗戀她的司機杰夫，有這些好心人關愛她，即使生活困苦，塞爾瑪也覺得其樂融融。
