The Lantern Festival (元宵節) is the last day of the Chinese New Year celebration. This day is for the last moment for setting off fireworks, the last excuse for eating a big feast and the last chance for family getting together before the “年” celebrations are over. (Latern Festival is also a traditional time of celebration for foreigners who live in China).
The Lantern Festival, the 15th of the first month of the lunar calendar, is the first full moon of the year. Celebrations and traditions on this day date back to the Western Han Dynasty.
Traditions for this festival: as the name indicates, hanging and looking at lanterns is the main tradition. Lanterns of various shapes and sizes are displayed on trees, or along river banks.
Parents often take their children to Lantern Fairs and sometimes lucky kids even get a mini toy lantern.
Another tradition is guessing lantern riddles. These are riddles that are hung on lanterns for people to shoot down and solve. The riddles are usually short, wise, and sometimes humorous. The answer to a riddle can be a Chinese character, a famous persons name, a place name or a proverb. This tradition has become a popular game with serious staying power even as social development changes other traditions.
Other than that, the most important thing to do today is to eat sweet dumplings. In northern China, sweet dumplings made of glutinous rice flour are called “元宵” while in southern part they are called “湯圓”. Typical sweet dumplings are filled with black sesame sauce, sweetened bean paste, or hawthorn. Making “元宵” today is like a game or an activity, so its seldom done without a reason and a group of friends or family present to help out.
The Origin and Origin of the Yuanxiao (Filled round balls made of glutinous rice-flour for Lantern Festival)
The formation of the Yuanxiao (Filled round balls made of glutinous rice-flour for Lantern Festival) Festival custom has a long process. According to historical data and folk legends, the 15th day of the first month has been paid attention in the Western Han Dynasty. Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty worshipped "Taiyi" at Ganquan Palace on the first month (Taiyi: the god who dominates the world), which was regarded as the precursor of the worship of gods on the 15th day of the first month.
The 15th day of the first lunar month truly became a folk festival after the Han and Wei dynasties. The introduction of Buddhist culture in the Eastern Han Dynasty has an important significance in promoting the formation of the custom of the Yuanxiao (Filled round balls made of glutinous rice-flour for Lantern Festival).
During the Yongping period of Emperor Ming of Han (58-175 AD), due to Emperor Mings promotion of Buddhism, Cai Yin returned from India to seek Buddhism. He claimed that every 15th day of the first lunar month in the country of Mahayana in India, monks gather to pay their respects to the Buddhas relics, which is an auspicious day for Buddha worship. In order to promote Buddhism, Emperor Ming of Han ordered the burning of lanterns in the palace and temples on the fifteenth night of the first lunar month. Therefore, the custom of lighting lanterns on the fifteenth night of the first lunar month has gradually expanded in China with the expansion of Buddhist cultural influence and the addition of Taoist culture.
It is also said that the Yuanxiao (Filled round balls made of glutinous rice-flour for Lantern Festival) Festival originated from the "Torch Festival". In the Han Dynasty, people held torches to drive away insects and beasts in the countryside, hoping to reduce insect damage and pray for a good harvest. Since the Sui, Tang, and Song dynasties, it has been extremely prosperous. Until today, people in some areas of southwestern China still make torches from reed or tree branches on the 15th day of the first lunar month, and dance in groups holding torches high in the fields or on grain drying fields.
Another saying is that the custom of burning lanterns on Yuanxiao (Filled round balls made of glutinous rice-flour for Lantern Festival) originated from Taoisms "Three Yuan Theory": the 15th day of the first month is Shangyuan Festival, the 15th day of July is Zhongyuan Festival Festival, and the 15th day of October is Xiayuan Festival. The three officials in charge of the upper, middle, and lower levels are heaven, earth, and human. The heaven officials are joyful, so lanterns are lit during the Upper Yuan Festival.
In terms of the length of the festival period, it was one day in the Han Dynasty, three days in the Tang Dynasty, five days in the Song Dynasty, and ten days in the Ming Dynasty, from lighting the lanterns on the eighth day of the lunar new year until the night of the seventeenth day of the first lunar month. Adjacent to the Spring Festival, the city is bustling during the day, and it is spectacular to light up lights at night. In the Qing Dynasty, there were also "hundred plays" such as dragon dance, lion dance, running dry boats, walking on stilts, and twisting yangko, but the festival period was shortened to four to five days.
