How to say "師兄"
During a delightful meeting with some readers last week at Beijing Institute of Technology, a student from Renmin University of China asked: "How to say 師兄/師姐 in English?"
Thats a good question.
"師兄/師姐", or "師弟/師妹"，is from Chinese martial arts culture. Fellows learning from the same master (師父) are "senior/junior male/female fellow apprentices". As the saying goes, "The master teaches the trade, but the apprentices skill is self-made" (師父領進門，修行在個人).
On campus these words refer to students whore studying in or have graduated from the same major at the same university. "Alumnus" (校友) may be the closest word in English. But a sentence like "John and I are both alumni of Ohio University" indicates both John and the speaker have graduated.
So, to translate "師兄師姐" into English, we have to describe instead of using single words.
Several suggestions are:
"Were both majoring in business at Ohio University." (我們是在俄亥俄大學學商務的同門。)
"She shares the same major as me but is senior/junior to me." (她是跟我同專業的師姐/師妹。)
"Hes in my same major but a year ahead." (他是跟我同專業的上屆師兄。)
"Hes in my major but a year below/behind me." (他是跟我同專業的下屆師弟。)

例句2：I thought the Red Sox had a real chance to win the World Series this year after so long without a championship. But they turned out to be no great shakes, just like last year.
他說：我原以為紅襪隊那么久沒有得過冠軍，今年一定有可能在世界職業棒球錦標賽中贏得勝利，但是他們卻和去年一樣成績平平。
這里的no great shakes意思是成績平平，并不出人頭地。聽來這個失望的球迷只能耐心地再等上一年了。
今天要學的第二個習慣用語是：shake a leg。在Shake a leg這個習慣用語里，shake顯然是個動詞，照字面意思看shake a leg就是晃動一條腿。我們聽下面的例子來捉摸習慣用語shake a leg是什么意思吧。這是大學生在叫醒早上貪睡不起的室友Bob。注意他話里的shake a leg：
例句3：Bob! Hey, Bob, wake up! It’s already 9:30 and you’ve got that big math test at 10 o’clock. Come on, man, shake a leg! Come on, - you’ve got to get moving right now!
他使勁叫醒Bob，因為已經到九點半了，而Bob十點有數學大測驗。時間緊迫，所以他要Bob必須立刻行動起來。

1. Put the clock back
字面意思：把鐘表指針向后撥。
實際意思 指行為或觀念跟不上時代；按陳舊的規矩辦事；老腦筋。
例子: You must give university students more freedom. Don’t try to prevent them from falling in love before graduation. You can’t put the clock back！

2. Work against the clock
字面意思：與鐘表的走動比賽。
實際意思 指的是抓緊時間工作，強調不停頓哦~
例子: I have to work against the clock to finish my thesis before the holiday finishes. Otherwise my supervisor will not be happy with me.

3. Go like clockwork
字面意思：像鐘表的機械裝置一樣運轉。
實際意思 指計劃、安排、工程或項目等進展順利，強調有條不紊，沒有麻煩。它還有另一種說法：Run like clockwork.
例子: The president is very happy that all our arrangements for the project are going like clockwork. And I am sure we can finish the project in time.
如果part2的.話題考到了future plan, something you saved money for這種和計劃相關的話題，烤鴨們是可以把go like clockwork運用上去的，表達我們的計劃按部就班，進展的非常順利~
4. After hours
字面意思：鐘點之后。
實際意思 在規定的下班時間以后，非營業時間。
例子: Public houses must not stay open after hours, for if they do, they will have to face sanctions imposed by the government.
這個詞其實在我們平常的生活中非常常見，比如After hours GP指的是非營業時間的GP醫生。
5. This minute
字面意思：這分鐘。
實際意思 馬上，立刻，立即。
例子: What a mess you have made! Your room is like a pigsty! I want you to clean your room this minute!
這應該是每一個媽媽都會說的話~ 意思是你立刻把你的房間給我收拾干凈~~~ This minute和right now是一個意思哦。
二：與顏色相關的習語
6. In black and white
字面意思：以黑白形式。
實際意思 寫在紙上；以書面形式（常指合同或協議等法律文件）；白紙黑字。
例子: Business is business; I prefer to have our agreement in black and white.

8. Come out with flying colors
字面意思：出來時彩旗招展。
實際意思 非常成功，順利地度過了難關。變形體：Come off with flying colors. 說明：指戰艦凱旋歸來駛進港口時彩旗迎風招展的場景。
例子: She sat for the IELTS test and came out with flying colors.

9.Go into the red
Get out of the red
字面意思：進入紅色/走出紅色
實際意思 負債，多指負債貸款/償清債務
例子: The bank manager usually does not allow students to go into the red.
例子: The Company only needs 500, 000 dollars to get out of the red.
這里的red指的是債務~ 童鞋們是不是又多了一個替換詞呢~ 以后pay off the debt可以換成get out of the red啦~
10. Horse of a different color
字面意思：顏色不同的馬。
實際意思 完全是另一碼事，另外一回事。變形體: horse of another color（另一種顏色的馬）。
例子: Gambling is not the same as investing in the shares market. It is a horse of a different color.
賭博和炒股不一樣，它完全是另外一回事~ 意思與another matter相同
三：與身體相關的習語
11. An eye for an eye
字面意思：以眼還眼。
實際意思報復，復仇，懲罰。說明：A tooth for a tooth 的意思是“以牙還牙”。這兩條成語可放在一起用，也可用任何一個，意思一樣。
例子: She abused him, and he insulted her; an eye for an eye.

12. Face the music
字面意思：面對音樂。

13. Have one’s head in the clouds
字面意思：把頭放在云層里。
實際意思 不實際的；不現實的；想入非非。

14. Have one’s heart in one’s mouth
字面意思：把心放在自己的嘴里。
實際意思 害怕，緊張。
例子: I had my heart in my mouth when I checked my IELTS result.

四：與動物相關的習語
16. Crocodile tears
字面意思：鱷魚的眼淚。
實際意思 假悲哀；不是真心悲哀而流眼淚；貓哭耗子假慈悲。
例子: She dropped a few crocodile tears over her husband’s death then got his insurance money and married again two weeks later.

17. Rain cats and dogs
字面意思：（天上）下狗下貓。
實際意思 傾盆大雨。說明：英語受北歐文化的影響。在古代北歐神話中，狗象征風，貓象征雨�！柏埡凸贰毕笳鳌翱耧L暴雨”。
例子: It rained cats and dogs yesterday, so we had to cancel the football match.
天上當然不可能下貓下狗啦。當然也是不可能下錢的。
18. Give someone the bird
字面意思：給某人一只鳥。
實際意思(音同拉長的“不”，像是“bullshit”的省略)；給某人喝倒彩。
例子: When the actress forgot her lines, the audience gave her the bird.

19. Kill two birds with one stone
字面意思：一塊石頭打中兩只鳥。
實際意思 一箭雙雕；一舉兩得。
例子: He killed two birds with one stone by having dinner at his tutor’s place.

20. Put on the dog
字面意思：把狗帶在身上。
實際意思 炫耀、擺闊。竭力表現自我，好像自己非常重要、非常富有。但實際并非如此。
例子: They put on the dog in front of their guests, but the guests were not impressed.
