一、Kangaroos and the Cage 袋鼠與籠子
One day the staff members of a zoo called a meeting to discuss the problem--how to deal with the kangaroos that were found out of the cage. They came to the conclusion that the cage was placed too low and decided to raise it from one to two meters high. But the next day the kangaroos were still at large and they again raised the cage to three meters.
有一天，動(dòng)物園的管理員們發(fā)現(xiàn)袋鼠從籠子里跑出來了，于是開會(huì)討論，一致認(rèn)為是籠子的高度過低，所以他們決定將籠子的高度由原來的1米加高到2米。結(jié)果第二天他們發(fā)現(xiàn)，袋鼠還是跑到外面來，所以他們又決定再將高度加高到3米。
Quite beyond their expectation the next morning they saw the kangaroos still free to go about. They were alarmed and determined to go to all the length by raising the cage to the height of ten meters.
沒想到隔天居然又看到袋鼠全跑到外面，于是管理員們大為緊張，決定一不做二不休，將籠子的高度加高到10米。
Later a giraffe, while chatting with some kangaroos, asked them, “Do you think they will go on raising your cage?”
一天，長頸鹿和幾只袋鼠在閑聊，“你們看，這些人會(huì)不會(huì)再繼續(xù)加高你們的籠子?”長頸鹿問。
“Hard to say,” said a kangaroo, “if they continue forgetting to fasten the cage door.”
“很難說。”袋鼠說，“如果他們再繼續(xù)忘記關(guān)門的話!”
二、Three Turtles 三只烏龜
Three turtles decided to have a cup of coffee. Just as they got into the cafe, it started to rain.The biggest turtle said to the smallest one, " Go home and get the umbrella."The little turtle replied, "I will, if you don't drink my offee.""We won't," the other two promised.Two years later the big turtle said to the middle turtle, "Well, I guess he isn't coming back, so we might as well drink his coffee."Just then avoice called from outside the door, "If you do, I won't go."
只烏龜決定去喝咖啡。它們剛到咖啡店的門口，就下起雨來。于是最大的那只烏龜對最小的烏龜說，“回家去取傘吧。”最小的`烏龜說，“如果你們不把我的咖啡喝了，我就去。”“我們不喝，”另外兩只烏龜答應(yīng)說。兩年后，大烏龜對中烏龜說，“好吧，我猜他肯定不回來了，我們可以把它的咖啡喝掉了。”正在這時(shí)，一個(gè)聲音從門外傳來，“你們要是喝了，我就不去。”
三、Brave Rats 勇敢的老鼠
Three rats are sitting at the bar talking bragging about their bravery and toughness.
The first says, "I'm so tough, once I ate a whole bagful of rat poison!"
The second says, "Well I'm so tough, once I was caught in a rat trap and I bit it apart!"
Then the third rat gets up and says, "Later guys, I'm off home to harass the cat."
三只老鼠坐酒吧里吹著誰勇敢誰強(qiáng)悍。
頭一只說：“我太厲害了，上回我吃了一整包老鼠藥!”
第二只說：“得了，我才厲害呢，有回我被捕鼠夾夾住了，我把夾子都咬碎了。”
緊跟著第三只老鼠站起身來說：“回見了哥們，我要回去逗貓玩了。”
四、Skunk 臭鼬
"We have a skunk in the basement," shrieked the caller to the police dispatcher. "How can we get it out?"
"Take some bread crumbs," said the dispatcher, "and put down a trail from the basement out to the back yard. Then leave the cellar door open."
Sometime later the resident called back. "Did you get rid of it?" asked the dispatcher.
"No," replied the caller. "Now I have two skunks in there!"
“我們的地下室里有一只臭鼬，”打電話的人對警察調(diào)度員尖叫道。“我們怎樣才能把它弄出來?”
“弄一些面包屑，”調(diào)度員說，“從地下室往外鋪一條小道直到后院。然后將地下室的門打開。”
一段時(shí)間后，那位居民又將電話打了回來。“你們將它弄出來了嗎?”調(diào)度員問。
“沒有，”打電話的人答道，“現(xiàn)在那兒有兩只臭鼬了。”
