as dean of the faculty of law at the xxx university, probably china’s best higher learning institution, i am pleased to have this opportunity to recommend ms. xxx to you for acceptance into your law school.
i taught ms. x in two of the courses that i have offered, the finance law of china and the international finance law, and had therefore many opportunities to observe her performance in her undergraduate years. a diligent student, she scored an average grade of over 80 on the 100-point scale, excelling most of her fellow students in her studies. in a strict grading system like ours, this represented a remarkable achievement.
independent and intelligent, ms. x exhibited exquisite analytical and organizational skills in both her coursework and beyond. with a powerful aptitude for languages, she is articulate in both english and chinese. although her english had much to be desired when she first entered into the university, she quickly improved it as she moved into upper years. her english proficiency became so good in her third year that she won the rare opportunity, as one of the department’s ten chosen students, to take the course “american administrative law”, which was taught only in english by a visiting professor from the xxxx university law school. she passed the exam in that challenging course easily and achieved a grade of over 90, once again proving her intellectual caliber as a top student.
upon graduation, she joined the legal department of the china south industries corporation, one of the country’s leading foreign trade companies. i was delighted to learn that she was practicing what i had taught her in class. i understand that she has been continuously improving both her legal expertise and english proficiency since her graduation. in xxxx, she enrolled in the part-time program of master of laws in my faculty and now expects to be conferred her degree soon.

I am pleased to write this letter for my former student Miss Nan Li, who graduated from this College with an L.B. degree in June 1978.
Miss Li was admitted to the Department of Law of this College in 1974 through highly competitive
entrance examination which is conducted annually and is open to the whole nation. Even in such a selective group. Miss Li made herself distinguished. As professor and dean of the College, I have access to her records of academic work and moral conduct, In her fourth year study, I instructed her in Anglo-American Laws on Trespass. So I have known her quite well.
Miss Li's performance, like that in many other courses she taken, was excellent with a superior grade of 86 for the first semester, and 84 for the second semester. In our university and in other university here, 80 is considered "A" , the highest level.
As far as I know, Miss Li wishes to continue her study in Law for an advanced degree. I am sure she has had sufficient prerequisite knowledge for the subject and certainly has the ability to undertake the study.
I recommend Miss Li without reservation and shall appreciate your favorable consideration of her application.

以上所述當(dāng)然是一種最理想的情況。但是，為數(shù)不少的申請(qǐng)者則至少必須撰寫一封以上的推薦信草稿，提供給推薦人作為參考之用。此時(shí)，申請(qǐng)者就要耗費(fèi)一番心思去擬稿。推薦信之內(nèi)容通常不太需要像寫讀書計(jì)劃時(shí)那般地雕琢字句，并且要求嚴(yán)謹(jǐn)?shù)慕Y(jié)構(gòu)。一般而言，推薦信內(nèi)容有其一定的寫作方向及格式。第一段通常必須說明推薦者與你的關(guān)系;第二段以後則是主文部分，被推薦人的學(xué)術(shù)成就、工作經(jīng)驗(yàn)、個(gè)人特色或優(yōu)異表現(xiàn)……等，皆是可加以發(fā)揮的事項(xiàng);最後一段則可考慮用簡(jiǎn)單扼要的語氣，再次強(qiáng)調(diào)被推薦者優(yōu)秀的特點(diǎn)，并告訴評(píng)審委員自己毫不保留地推薦該申請(qǐng)者的態(tài)度等諸如此類的結(jié)尾辭，就算完成了一封推薦信草稿。
以我而言，在最後幾所申請(qǐng)學(xué)校時(shí)，由於時(shí)間比較緊湊，因此我采取「三分之二」的策略。什么是三分之二呢?大部分的學(xué)校要求的推薦信是三封，我選擇只在草擬工作上司與教授這兩封推薦信時(shí)，多花些心思於描述具體的事例。例如，在工作上完成什么樣的重大計(jì)劃或是曾經(jīng)協(xié)助某位教授的研究計(jì)劃;另外一封則以描述個(gè)人特質(zhì)及個(gè)性上的特色為主，不再特別找具體事跡時(shí)。前兩封推薦信所要注意所舉的事例不要寫的太過於一般性，以免顯現(xiàn)不出你在研究上的具備的能力與發(fā)展?jié)摿Α５谌饩筒恍杼^於注意與前兩封內(nèi)容之間的搭配關(guān)系，可多用一些力度，使用強(qiáng)列的形容詞來描述自己的特性。
市面上都會(huì)有一些留學(xué)書信參考范例的書籍，我是參考這些書籍的第一段及最後一段內(nèi)容來寫推薦信草稿，中間的這部分的寫作方式與內(nèi)容，則與讀書計(jì)劃相似。我的推薦人當(dāng)中，其中一位是教過我的教授。他要求看我的成績(jī)單、申請(qǐng)學(xué)校的名冊(cè)、推薦信的草稿、信封及讀書計(jì)劃。這些資料在當(dāng)時(shí)我都已準(zhǔn)備妥當(dāng)，由於我以前在修他的課及實(shí)習(xí)的.成績(jī)都很高，教授對(duì)我的印象還不錯(cuò)。不過讓我擔(dān)心的是，我的大學(xué)的在學(xué)總平均成績(jī)不是很好，不知是否會(huì)影響教授對(duì)我的整體印象。另外，他所寫的推薦信是直接在信封封口密封及簽名，不讓任何申請(qǐng)者看信的內(nèi)容，因此不知其所寫的細(xì)節(jié)著眼在哪些部分。
現(xiàn)在回想起來，建議讀者有機(jī)會(huì)應(yīng)該多與學(xué)校教授或其他推薦人溝通信件之內(nèi)容，特別是在所申請(qǐng)學(xué)校的課程內(nèi)容與專精領(lǐng)域各有不相同的情況，更是需要與推薦人討論這些學(xué)校的課程，讓他清楚地了解這些研究所課程及教授群。這樣一來，教授在寫推薦信的時(shí)候，對(duì)被推薦人的描述應(yīng)該會(huì)更具體而貼切。說不定學(xué)校教授認(rèn)識(shí)與你所申請(qǐng)研究所的教授，甚至與program director有學(xué)術(shù)合作的經(jīng)驗(yàn)及交情，對(duì)於你的申請(qǐng)可是會(huì)有很大的幫助。
多與學(xué)校教授聯(lián)系還可能會(huì)得到一些意想不到的資訊。如果系上有曾經(jīng)留美再回國(guó)任教的教授，通常會(huì)給你些美國(guó)當(dāng)?shù)卦摽葡祷蛳嚓P(guān)產(chǎn)業(yè)發(fā)展的最新狀況，這些都是非常寶貴的資訊。以我為例，系上有位教授其取得碩士學(xué)位的學(xué)校，與我所申請(qǐng)其中一家學(xué)校相同，所以當(dāng)我在與該教授談過之後，對(duì)這所學(xué)校的印象十分深刻。後來，這所學(xué)校很快給予我入學(xué)許可，也很感謝教授在我申請(qǐng)學(xué)校時(shí)所提供的留學(xué)資訊。
