        Resume Keywords

As the job market gets more competitive, electronic scoring and screening are being used by companies more and more to weed out potential employees. These screening techniques will use keywords and phrases to ensure an applicant is applying for the right position. Such systems are used to prevent human resources from reading applications from hundreds of unqualified applicants. Once these software screening practices are successful, the human resource director will then be able to call successful candidates in for interviews. Screening software is now set up to be the first test that an applicant must go through. The question is now how do you get past the electronic screening system? One way is to use position keywords.

Use words from the published job description. If the job you are seeking asks for experience in “selling, cleaning, research”, use these words in your resume. Screening software looks for job posting words first. If no specific words are found the software will kick the resume out of contention. Look at job postings in other companies for similar words that may represent your job search. These posting can also give you a high percentage of passing the software screening.

Always assume that your resume will be screened and scanned by a tracking system. It is much too difficult for hiring managers to read every resume they receive. These screening systems are unforgiving and if you do not meet the software set criteria, you will be rejected.

Do not just list keywords in a bulleted summary or as a line item in a professional abstract. This would make for a very strange resume. In the skills portion of your resume use examples with the keywords. This will be best for both the screening software and the potential interviewer. Be creative in your keyword usage and always give screening software what it requires by using keywords. Make your resume professional and to the point so when it does go to an actual human our keyword usage will be impressive.

Although screening software is common, remember the human factor, too. Someone will eventually read your resume and you want your resume to be pleasing to the hiring manger. Sprinkle keywords throughout your resume. There are types of software that will read the number of times you list the keywords, and this software will also determine if these words are used in sentences or descriptions and not just listed as bullet points.

In the past resumes were sent via mail using specific resume paper. As the electronic age has made hiring jobs much more efficient, applicants need to be more creative with their writing and formatting skills. Do not be overwhelmed. Have fun with your resume. Using keyw ords in an articulate and professional manner will catch the “eye “of the screening program. After the screening process your application will then go to a hiring manager, you will be called for an interview, and you can then impress the human part of your job search with your professional, keyword laden, and concise resume.
