4. Write a response in which you discuss which view more closely aligns with your own position and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should address both of the views presented.
5. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim and the reason on which that claim is based.
6. Write a response in which you discuss your views on the policy and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider the possible consequences of implementing the policy and explain how these consequences shape your position.
可以看出,這六種寫作指引都是由兩句話組成。前一句實質意義都不大,關鍵的指引在后 一句。其中,3.4.6的后半句尤為典型。
指引3的后一句 “be sure to address the most compelling reasons and/or examples that could be used to challenge your position"是要求考生“一定要論及自我立場的對立方會用哪些最有力的 理由和例證來挑戰自己的觀點”。這實際是要求考生在作文中一定要論及反方立場,所以,必 須從兩方面寫。
指引6一般出現在后面馬上就要講到的建議類ISSUE題目中。這個指引的后一句 “consider the possible consequences of implementing the policy"是要求考生必須要考慮到題目中 一項政策提議或建議的可能后果。常識告訴我們,當提出一項建議,就要求考慮該項建議的可 能后果,此時要考慮的內容只能是實施那項建議所可能導致的不良后果。這樣,建議本身以及 建議可能產生的后果又構成一個問題的兩個方面,所以,又必須從兩方面來寫。
至于指引4的后一句“you should address both of the views presented”,這已經是直白地要 求考生一定要論及題目中兩個不同或矛盾的立場。不從兩方面寫是不可能了。等到讀者看到具體帶有指引4的ISSUE題目,就會非常清楚這個指引的實質了。
實際上,指引2也幾乎總是出現在建議類ISSUE題目中。這個指引的后一句"describe specific circumstances in which adopting the recommendation would or would not be advantageous” 要求考生在作文中一定要論及題目中的建議“會導致有利或不利的結果的具體情形”?紤]一 個建議的正、反兩種結果的思路,體現在作文中只能是從兩方面寫的思路。
帶有指引1和指引5的ISSUE題目本身沒有明確提示要從兩方面寫,但大家隨后在理解和 應用“1+5”寫作模型的時候會發現,對這兩類ISSUE題目采用兩方面寫的策略的話,會感覺 無論切入題目分析還是展開寫作思路都非常方便和自然。
