Halloween is a holiday celebrated on October 31. By tradition, Halloween begins after sunset.
Long ago, people believed that witches gathered together and ghosts roamed the world on Halloween. Today, most people no longer believe in ghosts and witches. But these supernatural beings are still a part of Halloween.
萬圣節前夜是在10月31日慶祝的一個節日，根據傳統，萬圣節前夜的慶�；顒訌奶柭渖介_始。
在很久以前，人們相信在萬圣節前夜女巫會聚集在一起，鬼魂在四處游蕩。現在，大多數人們不再相信有鬼魂和女巫的存在了，但是他們仍然把這些作為萬圣節前夜的一部分。
The colors black and orange are also a part of Halloween. Black is a symbol for night and orange is the color of pumpkins. A jack-o’-lantern is a hollowed-out pumpkin with a face carved on one side. Candles are usually placed inside, giving the face a spooky glow.

【萬圣節的習俗】
面具化裝
在古時候，如果有旱災或是其它重大的災難，人們便會帶上丑陋的面具，因為他們害怕深夜還在外面游走的惡靈，如果晚上必須出門，便會戴上面具或用動物的皮毛裝飾自己，希望惡靈認不出他們來，或被丑陋的.面具嚇走。
后來敬畏鬼神的宗教意味逐漸轉薄，慢慢開始有小孩穿上鬼和精靈的衣服，出去嚇鄰居 trick or treat(不給糖，就搗蛋)，要大人請吃糖果的趣味習俗。
南瓜燈
在萬圣節還有雕刻南瓜燈的習俗，這是一則趣味的愛爾蘭的民間傳說。據說有一個名叫杰克的酒鬼，他有一天邀請惡靈來一起喝酒，但喝完后卻沒錢付賬，他就設計要惡靈變成六便士 ( six pennies ) 來付酒錢，可是杰克又沒拿它來付錢，反而用一條銀紙鎮住惡靈讓它出不來。
惡靈苦苦哀求杰克放他出來并答應不來嚇他、騷擾他，于是杰克就它出來，到了第二年萬圣節，惡靈又與杰克達成協議，答應這一年不會來騷擾杰克，但沒過多久杰克就過世了，這時天堂拒絕收容他，杰克只好到地獄報到，可是因為惡靈已經答應他這一年不騷擾他，所以也無法收容杰克。
天堂地獄都去不得，杰克怎么辦呢?而且路實在是太黑了，杰克也找不出路離開，這時惡靈就丟給他一塊已經燒得通紅的煤炭讓他在黑暗的地獄中比較能看清楚路，杰克將這小塊媒炭灰燼放在一個打了許多洞的菜頭當中，好讓它燒久一點。
根據這個傳說，后來愛爾蘭人就用菜頭來制作他們所謂的"杰克燈籠"。但是當移民們到了美國之后，發現新大陸的南瓜比菜頭普遍，于是改為用南瓜雕刻成各種鬼臉，然后在里面擺蠟燭了，這就是“南瓜燈”的由來。
