2.6 If any one is afraid of an operation of nature, he is a child. This, however, is not only an operation of nature, but it is also a thing which conduces to the purposes of nature.
2.7Nothing is more wretched than a man who traverses everything in a round, and pries into the things beneath the earth, as the poet says, and seeks by conjecture what is in the minds of his neighbours, without perceiving that it is sufficient to attend to the daemon within him, and to reverence it sincerely. And reverence of the daemon consists in keeping it pure from passion and thoughtlessness, and dissatisfaction with what comes from gods and men. For the things from the gods merit veneration for their excellence; and the things from men should be dear to us by reason of kinship; and sometimes even, in a manner, they move our pity by reason of men's ignorance of good and bad; this defect being not less than that which deprives us of the power of distinguishing things that are white and black.
Notes:
wretched [adj] ①(of a person) feeling ill/sick or unhappy; ②extremely bad or unpleasant; ③making you feel sympathy or pity; ④[only before moun] used to show that you think that sb/sth is extremely annoying
conjecture [n](formal) ①[C] an opinion or idea that is not based on definite knowledge and is formed by guessing. e.g.: The true of hid conjecture was confirmed by the newspaper report.
②[U] the forming of an opinion or idea that is not based on definite knowledge.e.g.: What was going through the killer's mind is a matter for conjecture.
[v](formal) to form an opinion about sth even though you do not have much informationon it.
reverence [n] ~ (for sb/sth)(formal) a feeling or great respect or admiration for sb/sth
e.g.: The poem conceys his deep reverence for nature.
merit [v] (not used in the progressive tenses不用于進行時) (formal) to do sth to deserve praise, attention, etc.
