第一步：重視首句,把握主題
完型填空文章的第一句話通常是沒有空白的完整句子，而且第一句往往是文章的主題句(Topic Sentence)，或是含有主題詞的句子，考生可以根據它來把握文章的中心思想，為下面答題奠定基礎。
首先我們要知道英文的主題句的特點。一個有效的主題句應該有以下兩個標準：
1.Topic：主題或議題。明確指示段落的內容，起到限定主題范圍的作用。
2.Opinion：反映作者對待主題的觀點、印象、態度，起到限定段落基調的作用。
知道了英文主題句的特點之后，我們在閱讀完型填空文章的第一句話時，就不應該只是讀懂其字面中文意思，而是要透過首句來預測文章的中心內容，為接下來做題把準方向。
第二步：速讀全文，掌握大意
一旦開始做題，就應該根據自己抓住的線索 快速做出反應，找出關鍵詞，掌握全文大意。若有個別難題，暫時跳過或初擬答案，隨著文章的空越來越少，全文的意思就會越來越清楚。
第三步：瞻前顧后，先易后難
完型填空所選的文章盡管比較短小，但它仍是一個意義相聯的語篇，它圍繞一個話題論述，在行文中詞語重復、詞語替代現象都不可避免�；蛘哌�會出現詞語和意義相互定義或相互解釋的現象，即同義定義或反義定義，所以我們在解題時應“瞻前顧后”，聯系上下文尋找相關線索，如某一個詞的原詞、指代詞、同義詞、近義詞、上義詞、下義詞和概括詞等。通過做題，大家會發現有時可以通過上下文就找出難解詞的定義或解釋，有時甚至原文中的短語或單詞就是答案。
第四步：重讀全文，核對檢查
由于選答案時講求一氣呵成，初選過后還應根據上下文對有疑問或把握不準的答案進行推敲。這時，應重讀文章，從語義和邏輯的角度檢查文章是否有問題，根據上下文調整答案。
