Your resume should or shouldn’t be centered. IT employers seem to like things left aligned, yet others state a majority of HR folks want information centered. Is "center left" an option, or does that sound too much like a political stance?
Your street address is not required, but must be there. Perhaps listing a street address is “old fashioned.” However, in a heavy relocation area like Tampa Bay, the lack of any address is one of the first clues that may tell me a candidate is not local.
You must be able to get your resume down to one page, unless you don’t. IHMO, if the first half page of a resume does what it needs to do, having a 2 or 3 page resume is not going to be an issue. Of course, I could be completely wrong.
List dates of employment on the left, or the right. Doesn’t it seem like either way is pretty “reader friendly?”
“Puff words” like “Driven, “Creative” or “Inventive” take up space and say nothing, unless they really get a reader’s attention.
Never use 3rd person unless you do. "Greg Lachs writes articles on LinkedIn. Some of them are read" might be fine for some situations, unless not.
No matter how you configure your resume, you’ll find a mix of results from readers. Each of us has his/her preferences and “hot buttons.”
Here’s some quick, common sense advice that’s not about format, writing or style: Make your resume easy for the reader to find the “good stuff” about you. Easy to find, easy to figure out, easy to make decisions. Recruiters have to make decisions after a 5-15 second first read of your resume.
Give them every chance to make a good decision on your behalf.
It’s not about a “right” or “wrong” format – it’s just a little common sense to get started.
