researcher
Washingtom,April4-The United States has more than 90millon families for the first time ,but each contains fewer people on average than ever ,the Census Bureau(統(tǒng)計局) reported today.
The 90,031,000 families in the United States averaged 2.64 members each as of last July 1. ―The reason is, in effect, changes in the age structure,‖ explained Campbell Gibson, a population researcher for the bureau. Most Americans born in the great explosion of births after World War II are mow in their 20‘s and 20‘s when they are most likely to set up families, he said.
The fact that many are doing so increased the number of families from 80.4million in 1980 to 88.8 million in 1986 and past the 90 million mark last summer . At the same time, the average number of people per family dropped from 2.75 in 1935 to 2.65 in 1986 and then to 2.64,Mr Gibson said.
By comparison, the 1970 Census found the average family contained 3.15 people Families averaged more than four people in 1939 and more than five in 1880. The growing number of ever- smaller families is still going on, but Mr Gibson pointed out that family growth was mot the same as population increase in the 1970‘s. The same age factors (因素) that are increasing the number of families also happened then, but in the 1970‘s the proportion(比例) of families in each age group was also growing .
That has not continued in the 1980‘s for a number of possible reasons, Mr Gibson said.
For example, in the 1880‘s more young people have chosen to remain home with their parents instead of setting up housekeeping on their own ,as many did in the 1970‘s. This could be caused by the increasing cost of housing, he said. Delays in marriage while was not the only factor for the family changes.
1.The smaller figure of families reported here is ______.
A.1980 B. 80,400,000 C. 2.64 D. 90 milion
2.How did Mr Gibsin explain the reason of the increase in families? ______
A.About 9.96million new families have been set up since 1980.
B.All the big families were split into smaller ones.
C.There is a great number of young people who are newly married.
D.There was a great explosion of births during the present Second World War.
3.What is the reporter‘s attitude (態(tài)度) toward the present situation?______
A.peopAle should get married at a later age .
B. The average number of family numbers should be 2.64.
C.It‘s not clear in the report.
A. A. D.Young people should set up housekeeping on their own ,as many did in the
1970‘s.
4. From the last paragraph we may infer that _____.
A.delay in marriage will not help the number of families
B.Delay in marriage is the major factor of the family changes
C.The writer felt sorry that many young people now delay their marriages
D. There must be some other factors which have led to the slower family growth in the 1980‘s.

The run-up to the launch of Chinas first lunar orbiter at the end of this month has caught the countrys imagination, with more than two thirds of the nation hoping to see the launch live on TV, according to a survey.
According to the survey by China Youth Daily and qq.com, almost the entire nation hopes to catch images of the event at some point, with 99 percent of the 10358 respondents saying they expected to witness the satellite launch and 68.9 percent said they were certain to watch the live broadcast of the launch. On xxx, two popular web portals in the country, internet users have contributed some 2,000 poems and 5000 drawings on the theme of Change I.
The satellite launch means much more than just saying hello to the moon. Maybe in the future we could also send some people to accompany sister Change, said a college student in the survey.
Remarkably, many people expect to visit the moon one day, with 93.4 percent of respondents saying they expected to do so.
Change I is named after Change, a famous character from Chinese mythology. She ascended from earth to live on the moon as a celestial being after drinking an elixir.
There is also another connection between the moon and China. In the 1970s, a crater on the moon was named after a Chinese stargazer, Wan Hu, who is said to be the first astronaut in human history.
Legend says about 600 years ago, around the middle of the Ming Dynasty, Wan Hu, a local government official, tried to fly into space with the help of a chair, two big kites and 47 self-made gunpowder-filled rockets. According to the legend after the rockets were lit there was a huge bang and lots of smoke. When the smoke cleared Wan was nowhere to be found.
Chinas first astronaut flew into space in 2003 with the launch of the Chinese-made spaceship Shenzhou V. China became the third country, after the Soviet Union and the United States, to carry out manned space missions.
1.Which is true according to the passage?
A. According to a survey, two thirds of the nation are hoping to see the launch live on TV,
B. The internet users have drawn some 5000 pictures of ‘Chang’e’.
C. Wan Hu, a Chinese stargazer , was dead after the huge bang and a lot of smoke.
D. China’s first astronaut flew into space in 2003 in the spaceship Shenzhou VI.
2.What’s the meaning of the underlined word in paragraph 5?
A. a kind of medicine for long life. B. a kind of medicine to make you light enough to fly in the air.
C. a kind of wine D. a kind of alcohol.
3.Why was Wan Hu said to be the first astronaut in human history?
A. Because a crater on the moon was named after his name.

Three decades ago,Steve McCurry took arguably the most famous picture of all time.Yet even after all this time, the photographer is filled with enthusiasm when he talks about Afghan Girl.
“I knew she had an incredible look,a sharp gaze,”he recalls.“It was before digital camera and with the big crowd and dust all around, you never knew what would happen with the film. When I developed the picture,I knew it was special.I showed it to the editor of the National Geographic, and he jumped to his feet and shouted,‘That’s our next cover’.”
Not only did Afghan Girl become the magazine’s next cover, but the most successful in its distinguished history. The striking portrait of 12yearold Sharbat Gula,in a refugee camp, was taken in December 1984 and published the following year.
When McCurry reflects upon its popularity, what excites him most is the impact that this single image has had on the real world.
“People volunteered to work in the refugee camps because of that photograph,”he says.“Afghans are incredibly proud of it,as the girl is poor but shows great pride, strong will and selfrespect. It drew attention to their poor situation, and inspired a lot of people.” It also led the National Geographic to set up the Afghan Children’s Fund—and meant that to this day,McCurry is never charged a fare by appreciative Afghan taxi drivers.
The portrait forms the centerpiece of a major exhibition of McCurry’s work, which opened recently in Monza,Italy, and will run until 6 April. The famous photograph is just one of thousands of extraordinary pictures that McCurry has taken over a 40year career, during which he has won dozens of awards. For many years, frontline war photography like this was McCurry’s stock in trade.Indeed,it enabled him to make his name.
